Statement
What keeps me up at night? My main source of anxiety nowadays lies south of the border, where two campaigns are running in a dead heat for leadership of the United States, a contest that will have an strong effect on Canadians and the rest of the world. it appears that the forces of reason, of openness and tolerance are pitted against ones of reaction, fear and misogyny. Even though the common perception in our culture here is that a courageous and experienced woman should handily defeat a man convicted in court of a number of crimes against women and society…this appears not to be so.
many people, perhaps subconsciously, think that men are inherently stronger and better suited to lead, no matter what the character of the man is.
This perception is ingrained in our Christian mythology, out of which I chose the Creation myth where Adam is shown to be given the gift of life, enabling him to eventually give woman and humanity. Really, shouldn’t woman be a leader as a giver of life?
This painting seeks to upend our perceptions a bit by showing Eve receiving the power to lead and give life.
